2006/08/01 - The Manta Ray & Whale Shark Trust |
Populations of both mantas and whale sharks have been decimated by fisheries in many countries, yet few scientific studies have examined these threatened species. The Manta Ray & Whale Shark Trust is now conducting world-leading research on the ecology and conservation of mantas and whale sharks. The scientific program examines issues directly related to both the continued survival of these species, and the promotion of a sustainable tourism industry. The research program for the Trust began in 2005 with the arrival of Andrea Marshall, who has been researching the Mozambican manta ray population since 2003 for her PhD, and Simon Pierce who has been researching the conservation and biology of sharks and rays in Australia since 2002 for his PhD.
